Suddenly Joseph wants to stuff toys in his mouth again, something he hasn’t done in months. I suspect he’s got new teeth coming in and it feels good to clamp down.

Oh! And Joseph is getting so good at standing! Not nearly as wobbly as he was just a week ago.

Seems like Joseph suddenly grew up a lot in the last few weeks. He’s feeding himself, pushing up to sitting, even standing with help. Doesn’t hurt that Wai Pwoh sent over a box of handsome big boy clothes. I’m a little biased, but Joseph gets cuter and cuter by the day. No, wait — make that by the second.

Joseph never wanted to stand and bounce in my lap, and every time I tried to prop him up under his arms, he’d turn into a limp noodle on purpose. Lately I’ve been stocking the top of the coffee table with fun toys, and now Joseph asks me to help him up all day long. Today, I even caught him teetering up on his tippy-toes! Now that it’s getting warmer, Joseph can get a better grip with sock-less feet.

Why hello, gorgeous!

Joseph is getting to be a pro at stacking and threading. Love the bed head here and that intense concentration.

So far, we are doing a good job turning Joseph into a bookworm. After playing with cars, his next favorite thing is when I ask, “Joseph, do you want to read a book together?”

As an infant, Joseph spent hours and hours gazing at the trees outside. Here’s how they looked when he came home, new leaves just emerging.

Fast forward one year: leaves out, cars in as the top choice of entertainment. Although I have to say, I’ve caught Chris playing with the cars at night after Joseph has gone to bed. (He says he is putting them away.)

Happy birthday, Joseph!! Has it really been a year since we brought you home?

A first birthday definitely qualifies as a good excuse to celebrate with a Yummy House cake. But oh, the injustice of being a baby. You get to taste the frosting, but you don’t get to actually eat your own birthday cake.

Can’t believe my little baby is nearly one. He’s developed a personality and, oh yes, distinct interests. Anything with wheels captivates Joseph! Big dump trucks, Hot Wheels, trains, even an airplane in a pinch.

The empty diaper box makes a great two-level parking garage.

Weekend with Dad

Chris hardly gets any time with Joseph during the week because his job is so crazy. We had a blissfully breaking news-free weekend, so Joseph got Dad for two whole days. It’s so important to me for them to have their guy time.

Joseph’s got us well trained — he throws, we fetch.

I’m not baking much these days, so my kitchen stuff is getting repurposed. A big metal mixing bowl is super fun. You can try to climb inside, bang on the outside and gaze at your reflection too.

First haircut

I just gave Joseph his first haircut — how scary is it to wield scissors by your baby’s face?! Trimmed his bangs because they were getting into his eyes. He’s still got that funny piece on the side. It’s super long because it’s been growing since he was born.

This lucky guy got a babysitter all the way from San Francisco:

Auntie D claims she’s not a “baby-person” but from the way Joseph giggled her entire visit, I don’t think that’s true at all. She made silly animal noises, sang songs, read tons of books and kept Joseph hugely entertained while I worked.

Chris had his day with Joseph on Sunday. The two of them spend lots of time reading. Dr. Seuss is Joseph’s favorite!

Joseph, 10 months

Joseph is getting so good with his hands. He used to try to stuff the entire wire structure into his mouth; now he’s gotten the hang of scooting the beads along.

Not crawling yet, but he’s pretty adept at pushing off my hands to scoot around.

Sleeping like a baby

Joseph is a good sleeper and will zonk out for nearly 12 hours a night. That’s in addition to the two hours he spends napping during the day, so… he’s only awake for 10 hours a day. Ah, the life of a baby.
