Washington State Fair celebrates 125th anniversary

The Washington State Fair just wrapped up $28M in renovations for its 125th anniversary. I went on the Classic Coaster and I thought for sure I was going to die.

Here’s what’s NEW this year:

– Drone and firework show on opening night, Aug. 29, starting at 10 p.m.

– The Gold Gate got a snazzy makeover.

– Self-guided walking tour app.

– Tanghulu is new this year. There’s also a new 1900 Food Hall & Rooftop Bar.

– Immersive ag exhibit named “Our Food, Our Farms, Our Washington.” Free!

– The M Barn got replaced with the Fair Park & Stage.

Even if you stick to just the free stuff, there’s more than enough for a full day of fun.

Prof. Smart’s science show, engaging and FREE. He got these kids to scream together and it shattered the light bulb.
Pioneer Village, free! Old-fashioned sawing, grinding grain and sifting flour, pumping water, churning butter. All the good stuff.
The mama was completely zonked out. 11 piglets, I would be too.
We’ll never be too old for the Farm at SillyVillle as long as they keep handing out fruit leather at the end of the mission.
Little Mermaid live theater, free, featuring Arabella and the giant starfish.
Free cattle birthing exhibit. This calf is 18 hours old!
Lots of murals and photo ops. This one makes use of the wall outside the restroom.
I was skeptical of the new Fair Park & Stage, which replaced the M barn. It’s Adirondack chairs lined up on turf. But then I tried one out, listened to the Bruce Springsteen cover band, and it was relaxing and nice!
The only thing I spent money on was for these scones on the way out, $30 for a baker’s dozen.
