New holiday drive-thru at the Fair

Christmas trees
Same spot, same kids, four years apart. WHAT. Where are my squishy baby cheeks?? Sort of related, here’s a story I wrote for The Seattle Times with ideas for an uncancelled Christmas.

Empty playground
The field at school was always a dust bowl in the summer, and a mud pit in the winter. With 500+ pairs of feet trampling on it every day, that grass never stood a chance. It’s long and lush now. Happy for the grass, sad for the kids.

Rowboats on Lake Union
Did you know you can rent rowboats for free at The Center for Wooden Boats? Signups are now online; it’s super easy and there are tons of slots Wednesday through Sunday. We had a lovely boat ride, and Chris got a workout. If you’re getting on a rowboat, definitely bring someone to row the boat.

November staycation

Hedwig in Queen Anne
We went in search of the snowy owl in Queen Anne, and found Hedwig at 1st Ave W and Boston Street! (Snowy owls are native to the Arctic and mainly live on the tundra.) The key is to look for a big group of people staring at a house, and that’s where the snowy owl…

Pileated woodpecker
This guy showed up in our backyard today and I immediately Google, “ARE WOODPECKERS BAD FOR TREES.” I just spent a small fortune getting this particular Pacific madrone trimmed and I’m very attached to it. Pretty, though.
