  • Indie bookstores and dumplings

Part I of I-can’t-believe-I get-to-write-things-I-love: indie bookstores! There is a bookstore dedicated to design/architecture books, a bookstore for cookbooks, a bookstore where the books are organized by emotion. We’re a city of readers. Part II of I-can’t-believe-I get-to-write-things-I-love: dumplings! How to make them (and where to buy the best frozen ones, let’s get real) in…

  • Back to school

    5th and 1st grade!

  • St. Edwards lodge

Couldn’t resist taking a peek inside the Lodge at St. Edward State Park, even though we weren’t staying there. They were setting up for the wedding of the kid of the Space Needle’s owners, and due to an oversight, we didn’t make the guest list. A century year ago this building was a seminary, then…

  • St. Edwards State Park playground

Adding another one to my list of “I can’t believe I’ve never been here before:” St. Edwards State Park. It’s about 35 minutes away, HUGE park. We didn’t even do any of the trails or explore the beach, we just played at this cool old wooden castle playground. They don’t make playgrounds like this anymore.

  • TBT: Pullman

TBT: Pullman in the ’80s, and Pullman now. It was fun to see my childhood haunts again: Wawawai, Reaney Park, McGee Park, Jefferson Elementary, Kamiak apartments.

  • Pullman road trip

Pullman is a small and friendly town, and I mentioned in this Seattle Times story how the mayor of Pullman even gave me his cell phone number. After the story ran online, the mayor of Seattle e-mailed me to give me HER cell phone number! Bwahahahaha! Who knew Jenny Durkan has a sense of humor? Chris…

  • Chutes and Ladders

We are using these final days of freedom before s****l starts up to hit up our favorite playgrounds. The boys call this the Chutes and Ladders playground; it’s West Fenwick Park in Kent. A bit of a haul, but this place is UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE. Then as we were about to leave (after two solid hours of…

  • Meet Fresh treats

Tofu pudding and grass jelly?! How could something so yummy have such terrible names??

  • Easy at-home art projects inspired by a museum visit

My favorite room at the Seattle Art Museum is the gallery with Australian aboriginal art. It’s part of the permanent collection, tucked in the back next to Northwest Native art. Love how they use a bunch of dots to tell a beautiful visual story. I could stare at these forever. More easy at-home art ideas…

  • Hotel pool

Happiness is getting the pool all to yourself.
