  • Volunteer Park

We hadn’t been to Volunteer Park in ages and I needed a reminder of how beautiful this place is. Took the kids to see the renovated Asian Art Museum and visit the playground. Volunteer Park is nice on a hot day because it’s shaded by mature trees. There’s a big wading pool Saturday-Tuesday too.

  • Blueberry picking

Ticked off another delicious item on our summer bucket list: blueberry picking! We go every year, except I think I missed the year Paul was a newborn. The boys have gotten better at picking berries — we managed to pick a whole $3 worth this time; usually it’s like 26 cents. But really, 90 percent…

  • Row, row, row your boat

Because Sunday Sails are on hold, the Center for Wooden Boats has two rowboats you can reserve for free. I picked a later time slot (nicer light) but I hadn’t realized what party scene Lake Union is on a Saturday night! Butt cheeks and beer, and very loud music. The other rowboat was reserved by…

  • Remlinger Farms

Summer bucket list hot ticket item: Remlinger Farms! The boys LOVE it. The older they get, the braver they get, and the wimpier I get.

  • Favorite snacks, favorite playground

Picked up our favorite snacks (bubble tea and tofu pudding from Meet Fresh) to enjoy at our favorite playground (Surrey Downs neighborhood park). A banner day!

  • Fort Worden

I always wanted to see an orca in the Puget Sound!

  • New decade

A new decade! A wise editor once told me, “I wish I had the body I had in my 20s with the brain I have in my 30s.” Yeah, I get that now. What do I need to know about my 40s? Day 1 of my 40s: Learned that you can’t eat as much cake…

  • Olympic Game Farm

The kids get such a thrill out of feeding animals at the Olympic Game Farm, though driving through a herd of hungry bison makes us nervous. Some of the bison are bigger than the cars!

  • Lavender farms

It felt SO GOOD to stretch my photo muscles and shoot a newspaper assignment again. I miss newspaper photography; it just doesn’t get to happen much in this chapter of my life. My photos and story about Sequim’s lavender farms are in The Seattle Times here. World’s worst photo assistants. I’d fire them, but I…

  • Haircut

Before and after, summer hair chop! Photos by Paul.
