Chicago Day 2

Chicago Day 2: the Bean, Griffin MSI, Robie House, University of Chicago

The Bean, aka Cloud Gate, was closed for renovation our last trip, so we were anxious to see it this time. Big shiny jelly bean, it did not disappoint!

We made it to the Bean!

MSI is Chicago’s version of MOHAI. There’s even a diorama of Seattle inside! You can go down a coal mine, walk through a tornado, create a tsunami. Great hands-on fun.

There’s a model of Seattle at MSI, where the Viaduct lives on.

If you go inside the giant light box and turn on red, green and blue, the walls are illuminated WHITE.

I’m an architecture fan and I thought I’d check out some Frank Lloyd Wright, but wow, what a let down. We walked past his Robie House but did not go inside. As Paul said, “It looks like a middle school for bad boys.”

We accidentally walked to the University of Chicago. I started seeing a bunch of college-y kids wearing University of Chicago sweatshirts, and one of them pointed me to the Quad. Frank Lloyd Wright was a disappointment, but the University of Chicago campus blew me away. It literally looked like a collage catalogue come to life. I would have loved to poke around more and maybe sneak into some of the buildings, but my co-explorers were short on time and patience.

Angled roofline done in glass. Love it.
No one told me how hard it would be to catch tween and teen boys in a genuine moment. Here’s one where the light came through for me too.
University of Chicago campus. Drop. Dead. Gorgeous.
Ivy covered buildings, Gothic windows, even a few gargoyles.
It looks like someone staged this, plunked a group of students on the grass and propped a bike next to them.
